Philosophy
Physical Education is an important part of every student's development. Health Education helps student's develop important skills and good health throughout their life.
Comprehensive Health & PE in NJ Public Schools
Overview
Health & Physical Education in grades K-8 in Fair Lawn is aligned to with the NJ Student Learning Standards.
In middle school, students switch classes for health and physical education.

Elementary Health
Beginning in 2020, our district adopted The Great Body Shop as our elementary health resources.

Middle School Health
Beginning in Grade 5, students are taught and health physical education in a specialized health and physical education setting. For continuity, Grade 5 & 6 teachers continue using The Great Body Shop. A transition begins in grade 7 & 8 where other resources are used.
Students in Grade 5 & 6 will also benefit from our LEAD program. Information is provided below.

High School
Fair Lawn educators have dissected the NJ requirements and cross referenced them with our resources to make a user friendly guide for parents to review. When reviewing the curriculum, please pay close attention to the "objectives" which describe how we address NJ requirements in our classrooms. When in doubt, ask your child's teacher for details.
NJ Health Education Opt Out Law
The following statute provides an opt-out option for any instruction in health, family life education or sex education and would apply to any instruction in accordance with the New Jersey Student Learning Standards – Comprehensive Health and Physical Education.
18A:35-4.7
Any child whose parent or guardian presents to the school principal a signed statement that any part of the instructions in health, family life education or sex education is in conflict with his conscience, or sincerely held moral or religious beliefs shall be excused from that portion of the course where such instruction is being given and no penalties as to credit or graduation shall result therefrom.

UPDATE AUGUST 2025:
Letters will be sent home via e-mail directly to parents and may also be obtained from the classroom teacher or using this link. Parents should follow the direction on the letter and return it directly to the classroom/health teacher.

LEAD
Fair Lawn Public Schools and the Fair Lawn Police Department partner with each other through the LEAD Program.
Law Enforcement Against Drugs (L.E.A.D.) is a non profit (501C3) organization, supported by dedicated police officers, committed to protecting our youth and communities from the proliferation of drugs, drug related crimes, peer to peer/cyber bullying and violence.

Too Smart to Start
Too Smart to Start is a program offered to Fair Lawn Public Schools students in partnership with the Boro of Fair Lawn through the Fair Lawn Alliance for Substance Abuse, Prevention (FLASAP).
