G Suite for Education ( Parents/Guardians)
Dear Parent/Guardian,
G Suite for Education is an online suite of applications designed for schools which includes calendars, email, web pages, word processing, spreadsheets, and presentations -- all of which synchronize and flow together and integrate into existing course curricula. G Suite is provided free of charge to schools, colleges and universities across the United States and around the world. We believe these tools will provide the essential skills students will need to be adept in the global workplace of this century.
To encourage the use of 21st Century Learning skills and increase communication and collaboration among students and teachers, one or more of your child’s classes maybe using G Suite during the school year. ALL STUDENTS PARTICIPATING IN THE G SUITE for EDUCATION PROGRAM MUST HAVE PARENT/GUARDIAN PERMISSION. Permission form is available on the Genesis Parent Portal (Forms tab); alternatively, you can print/sign the Technology & Applications Permission form here. If you have already signed the G Suite permission form, you do not need to sign this again for the new school year.
Gmail accounts will be assigned to each student (in grades 6-12 ONLY) pending parental/ guardian approval. The email address will only work within Fair Lawn’s Google Apps domain. Students cannot email to or receive email from outside of this domain.
Responsibilities
As a participant in Fair Lawn's G Suite for Education program, students must assume the following responsibilities for all their communication and work within the Google Apps domain:
all communication and work must be done for educational purposes only.
communicate with others in a courteous and respectful manner at all times.
maintain the privacy of their assigned email address and password and respect the privacy of others.
use only the provided email address and password.
follow the policies as stated in the Fair Lawn Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) which each student and parent/guardian has already signed.
Prohibitions
Within the domain, students must not:
access files and information other than their own.
tamper with or destroy data
access or distribute abusive, harassing, libelous, obscene, offensive, profane, pornographic, threatening, sexually explicit or illegal material.
engage in any activities for commercial, purchasing, financial gain or illegal purposes.
use a false identity in any communications or work
misrepresent the Fair Lawn Public Schools
Access Restriction
Access to and use of the G Suite for Education domain is considered a privilege accorded to the Fair Lawn Public Schools. The School District maintains the right to immediately withdraw the access and use of the G Suite for Education domain when there is reason to believe that violations of law or District policies have occurred. In such cases, the alleged violation will be referred to the Principal for further investigation and adjudication.
Security
The G Suite for Education domain has strong content filters in place. However, the Fair Lawn Public School District cannot assure that users will not be exposed to unsolicited information and does not guarantee the security of the electronic files located on the Google servers.
Privacy
The general right of privacy will be extended to the extent possible in the online environment of the G Suite for Education domain. The system administrators may have to examine files and email to diagnose and correct problems within the G Suite for Education domain. The School District reserves the right to access the student accounts in the domain including current and archival files.
Genesis
Genesis Features for Parents
Parents and Guardians now have the ability to edit/update their contact information in the Genesis Portal (CONTACTS tab). Rather than print and edit the Emergency Contact Information page, you can now edit your contact information directly on the portal. Please note that although this information will update immediately in our database, the updated information will not display on the Emergency Contact Form until the reports update each weekend.
Attendance notifications can now be posted in the Genesis Portal, instead of calling the school. Parents/Guardians can now post their child’s absence via the Genesis portal (ONLY Portal Accounts registered to a Parent/Guardian will have this enabled).
See the Directions to Post Absence on the Genesis portal for more details.
Genesis Portal Registration
When you register your child in Fair Lawn schools, the email you provide will AUTOMATICALLY be used to create a Genesis Portal Account for the parent/guardian. Once a week, emails are sent to new accounts with directions to login and a document explaining the various screens on the portal.
Students (gr 6-12) with a Fair Lawn Google Account will have a Genesis STUDENT Portal account automatically created, using the same username/password.
If you have questions about your Genesis Portal account, please email the Fair Lawn Genesis Help Desk
(Email Help Desk)
BYOD (Bring Your Own Device)
The Fair Lawn Public School District is committed to aiding students and staff in creating a 21st century learning environment. Students in grades in which the 1:1 laptop program has been implemented, are exempt from BYOD (when a district device is issued, students cannot bring their own device). Other district students and staff in the middle and high schools are permitted to access our wireless network with their personal devices (laptops, netbooks, tablets, smart phones, etc) during the school day. With parental permission and classroom teacher approval, students may use their own devices to access the internet and collaborate with other students. By allowing students to use their own technology on campus we are hoping to increase the access all students have to the technology they need to succeed.
What are the benefits of a BYOD Program?
Makes possible a 21st century classroom
Fosters student ownership of their own learning
Student real time access to information
Smooth transition between home and school
Provides easier student access to online instructional materials
Supplements school resources and equipment.
The program DOES NOT require that all students and staff bring their own devices to school. A student will not be penalized for NOT having a device. Although students will be able to access the school's network they will not be able to print to any school printer. Internet access will be filtered just the same as if a student were to log onto a school owned computer. The Tech department and teachers are not responsible for troubleshooting a student's personally owned device.
