Philosophy
Physical Education is an important part of every student's development. Health Education helps student's develop important skills and good health throughout their life.
Comprehensive Health & PE in NJ Public Schools
Overview
Health & Physical Education in grades K-8 in Fair Lawn is aligned to with the NJ Student Learning Standards.
In middle school, students switch classes for health and physical education.
Elementary Health
Beginning in 2020, our district adopted The Great Body Shop as our elementary health resources.
Fair Lawn educators have dissected the NJDOE requirements and cross referenced them with our resources to make a user friendly guide for parents.

Middle School Health
Beginning in Grade 5, students are taught and health physical education in a specialized health and physical education setting. For continuity, Grade 5 & 6 teachers continue using The Great Body Shop. A transition begins in grade 7 & 8 where other resources are used.

NJ Health Education Opt Out Law
The following statute provides an opt-out option for any instruction in health, family life education or sex education and would apply to any instruction in accordance with the New Jersey Student Learning Standards – Comprehensive Health and Physical Education.
18A:35-4.7
Any child whose parent or guardian presents to the school principal a signed statement that any part of the instructions in health, family life education or sex education is in conflict with his conscience, or sincerely held moral or religious beliefs shall be excused from that portion of the course where such instruction is being given and no penalties as to credit or graduation shall result therefrom.
L.1979, c. 428, s. 2, eff. Feb. 11, 1980.
Beginning in 2022-2023, classroom teachers will provide parents with information about opting out rather than having this information collected via Genesis Portal.
If your child lost their opt out letter, they can be downloaded from this website (See Above).

LEAD
Fair Lawn Public Schools and the Fair Lawn Police Department partner with each other through the LEAD Program.
Law Enforcement Against Drugs (L.E.A.D.) is a non profit (501C3) organization, supported by dedicated police officers, committed to protecting our youth and communities from the proliferation of drugs, drug related crimes, peer to peer/cyber bullying and violence.

Health & PE Legislation
Content taught in health & PE in NJ public schools is governed by the NJ Student Learning Standards (link at the top of this page) as well as several state statutes and laws. A list of the statutes is provided within the NJSLS, but new laws are passed every year.
Please note that NJSA 18A:35-4.35-36 Contributions of Disabled & LGBT Individuals applies to all content areas taught in public schools and is not included in the Health Opt Out Law NJSA 18A:35-4.7.
