Did you know that San Francisco 49ers star running back, Christian McCaffrey's grandfather, Dave Sime, graduated from our high school, class of ‘54? Aside from being a Hall of Fame honoree at Fair Lawn High School and Duke University and an Olympic medalist, Sime was also a world-renowned eye surgeon. Check out the article for more pictures and more information! Students in Ms. Kathy Straubel's AP biology classes at FLHS are participating in the Rutgers University Waksman Student Scholars program. This program provides an opportunity for the students to conduct an authentic research project in molecular biology and bioinformatics and publish their findings. Here students are micropipeting solutions to set up their bacterial culture. Through this project students will learn skills including micropipeting, PCR, gel electrophoresis and restriction digestion in order to identify the protein being coded for by a gene. They will then analyze the DNA sequence in order to determine characteristics of the protein including structure, function and interactions. If successful they will be published on the NCBI database.

In conjunction with the Super Bowl & our Character Education program, Milnes School collected 500 cans of soup to donate to the Fair Lawn’s Food Pantry. We had designated bins where students placed their donated soup cans to vote for certain teachers. Ms. McCarthy had the most soup cans donated in her bin. As a special treat, some students (and Mrs. Primavera!) sprayed silly string at Ms. McCarthy!
