EMERGENCY CLOSING INFORMATION

October  2006

Dear Parents, Students, Faculty:

With the unpredictable fall and winter season approaching, we wish to once again inform you about the process of notification we will use if schools are to be closed or if there is to be a delayed opening.

Decisions to keep schools open, delay the opening time, or close schools for the entire day must be made by 5:45 A.M. in order to make appropriate transportation arrangements and give timely notification.  Thus, decisions are based on what is known and anticipated no later than 5:30 A.M.

Due to time requirements established by the State Department of Education, it is necessary to have a minimum of four hours of instruction on a daily basis.  In order to accommodate this directive, the delayed opening schedule is as follows:

DELAYED OPENING SCHEDULE

Elementary Schools  9:25 am  Staff
  9:35 am Students
  3:00 pm Student Dismissal

Middle Schools 9:25 am Staff
  9:35 am Students
  2:51 pm Student Dismissal

High School 9:25 am Staff
9:35 am Students
2:50 pm Student Dismissal

ALL OTHER PERSONNEL                          Regular Time

(Custodians, Grounds Crew, Maintenance, Bus Drivers)

In the event of a delayed opening, the morning (A.M.) kindergarten children will report to school at 9:35 a.m. and will be dismissed at 12:05 p.m.   Afternoon (P.M.) kindergarten children will arrive at 12:20 p.m. and dismissed at 3:00 p.m.

When a decision is made to have a delayed opening, parents and staff will be notified by the Superintendent through our telephone community notification service, Swift Reach.  This call will be made before 7:00 a.m.  For a delayed opening, sirens will not be sounded.

When a decision is made to close schools for the entire day, parents and staff will be notified by the Superintendent through our telephone community notification service, Swift Reach.  This call will be made before 7:00 a.m. There will also be early alert warning sirens sounding at three one-minute steady signals and separated by one-minute intervals.  These will be sounded at 7:00 a.m., 7:15 a.m., and 7:30 a.m.

School closing/delayed opening announcements will be made on the following stations:

Radio Stations:   WOR (AM710)    and WINS (AM1010)

IMPORTANT NOTES

DO NOT CALL THE FAIR LAWN POLICE DEPARTMENT.

It will be the general practice to keep schools open if at all possible and reasonable.  Parents must exercise their own good judgment as to whether or not they send their children to school when schools are kept open during inclement weather.

It will be the general practice to keep schools open if at all possible and reasonable.  Parents must exercise their own good judgment as to whether or not they send their children to school when schools are kept open during inclement weather.

We try not to close early for inclement weather once children have reported to school except under extraordinary circumstances.
